The HEFCE-sponsored Data Protection Project hosted by Lancaster University was
established to provide practical advice to the HE sector on how to respond to
the Act, and will stage a series of one-day conferences across the UK in early
September.
These conferences will focus on the practical implementation of the Act in HE
institutions. Morning sessions will provide delegates with an overview of the
Act and crucial legal and procedural issues arising. These will be followed by
workshop sessions based around the Project Guidelines that will give delegates
the opportunity to examine and formulate good practice in small discussion
groups. These events are aimed at assisting anyone who acts as Data Protection
Officer for their institution or faculty, or who is involved in managing the
processing of student records.
The schedule of Conferences is:
Edinburgh (Thistle Hotel) 3rd September
Huddersfield (George Hotel) 6th September
London (Bloomsbury Thistle Hotel) 10th September
Birmingham (Grand Moat House Hotel) 12th September
All four venues are located in the immediate vicinity of mainline railway
stations. There is a standard booking fee of £85 per delegate (this does not
cover overnight accommodation, which delegates will need to arrange separately
if required).
To ensure delegates have the opportunity to explore issues in depth, attendance
at each conference is limited to a maximum of 40 persons, and early
confirmation of places is recommended. All bookings should be confirmed, where
possible, by Friday August 24th.
Application forms may be printed from the Lancaster University website, at
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/depts/studreg/dp-conference/booking-form.htm, and are
also available directly from me as a word document (email [log in to unmask]).
Copies of Project Guidelines can be downloaded from the Project website, at

I hpoe to see you in September.
