I repeat the message I sent when this was raised last June:
I have recently queried the Data Protection Commissioner's office about the
legality or otherwise of the way in which this university publishes degree
results.
As a federal university, we publish results for most HE institutions in
Wales by sending those results to our Institutions for publication on
noticeboards etc. (whether they do so or not is up to them) , the
institutions themseleves produce degree congregation booklets of names by
depatment and degree, and we release initial degree results for our major
institutions to the Western Mail newspaper, (showing subject,
classification, surname and initials). We have published such results in one
form or another for 107 years and don't want to stop !
I have received the following reply form the Senior Compliance Officer,
which may be of some interest to this list:
The Commissioner has considered the data protection issues regarding the
publication of degree results. The conclusion which she has reached is
that providing that this is done in a way which does not allow for
individuals students to be contacted (for instances through the inclusion of
e-mail or postal addresses or telephone numbers) then she does not consider
that this long established practice breaches the Data Protection Act.
Certainly there would be no question of the consent of students being
required However, if individual students were to indicate to the
University that they did not wish his or her name to be included on the
published list, then his or her rights should be respected.
