I agree, but there is still a need to check that the request is genuine.
You are quite right that if this is a job reference then it is not a
subject access request. I think I was just unsure as to the definition.
I mean, is a check on what course a student studied and what grade they
achieved actually classed as a reference?

This is surely not a subject access request. It is a job reference request
and you cannot charge for it. I mean, it is to your institution's interest
to help its students (and staff for this matter) get jobs.
