Some children, who happen to be of a variety of races/ethnic origin are to
be filmed by the BBC to provide course material for us. Does this amount to
the processing of sensitive data for which explicit parental consent is
required or is explicit consent only required if the precise ethnic origin
of individual children is obtained and included in the narrative with the
footage of a particular child?
Practice currently in connection with general shots of groups is that
parents are advised that filming will take place so that they can withdraw
their child if they wish. This is considered (by the BBC's legal dept) to be
sufficient consent for non-sensitive data. Individual parental consent is
however obtained in respect of specific children taking part in interviews.
