28/02 (10:35) APOLOGY AFTER MURDERED BOY OFFERED COLLEGE PROSPECTUS
By Tom Wilkinson, PA News
A mother has received an apology after she got a letter offering her murdered
son education opportunities at the college where his killer studied.
Liz Neailey (correct) today said she felt violently ill when she opened the
letter from Newcastle College, which suggested she considered sending her
son, Wesley, who would have been 15 this year, to study there.
Wesley was murdered in June 1998 by convicted paedophile Dominic McKilligan,
who was a music student at the college.
Mrs Neailey said: "It's the last place I would have sent him (Wesley) knowing
that McKilligan went there.
"I just couldn't believe it when I opened it, with all the press I had when
Wesley was murdered. It knocked me for six and made me feel violently sick."
The college has apologised for the upset caused and explained they used a
commercial mailing list company to send letters of prospectus to the parents
of 15 and 16 year-olds in the city.
Mrs Neailey, 34, of Fenham, Newcastle, said companies should keep more
up-to-date records to avoid causing similar upset to others.
She said: "I don't want anyone else to go through the upset I have, it is
really heart-rending.
"I'm trying to move on for my younger son Robert, who is seven, but he saw I
was upset when he came home from school yesterday. I just told him `Mamie has
been kicked in the teeth'."
A college spokesman said: "Newcastle College would like to apologise to Mrs
Neailey for the distress caused by our recent mailing.
"We want to offer educational opportunities to everyone living nearby and we
may use many different ways of reaching the parents of young people."
The spokesman said the mailing list company had been informed of the mistake.
