What difficulties would CCTV digital images used as evidence cause in court?
Is there any legal policies in place for Digital CCTV?
This is what we do with our evidence at the moment:
In the event of an incident, the branch / site staff or head office security department contacts our call centre giving details of the timing and individuals description. We then remotely download the encrypted images complete with their associated data from the recorder to a secure storage location at Head office.
A full audit trail of this operation is generated including a continuity statement comprising location, all relevant transfer information and CRC number check (the header file for each transmission).
Images that are required for evidence are written to a non-volatile medium, optical or CD-ROM WORM (write once read many). During this process a play only utility is added to allow the incident to be reviewed on an medium spec. industry standard computer with a suitable disk drive and display monitor.
At no point in any process is it possible to directly access the digital images for copying, editing or alteration.
