A couple of questions about how others handle release of information to Police
officers:
I'm sure most of us have a policy of not releasing information to the Police
without the appropriate paperwork, but what if the Police are responding to
your request to investigate a crime, for example you report a crime and an
officer arrives and requests information about a staff member in order to
investigate it, do you still ask for written confirmation that the officer is
assigned to that case? This could also apply if a CCTV operator witnesses a
crime on screen and reports it to the Police who then ask for the tape.
A second question on the same subject: what would you do if a Police officer
presented the necessary exemption certificate but then asked for data that you
can not readily see has a bearing on the case, even though it relates to
someone you know is under investigation?
Any opinions on these questions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Neil
