I hate to contradict you but when my father died in London my brother kindly
said he would register the death. When I processed the probate in Ipswich I
discovered to my embarrassment that he had got dad's date of birth wrong and
dad's forename was incorrect too. There is no surely about it at all where
family history is concerned.

Lisa,
again from only a personal view, Why not get the son to confirm his fathers
D.O.B, surley if he is his son he should know that!!!
This would then cover the route of requesting additional information fro
identification/security purposes.
Even if at the end of the day the day you cannot give much more information
than the D.O.B, at least you are covered from inadvertenly disclosing
information.
Whose to know that the father is not still alive???? 80 is not that old, and
I don't think it right to assume anyone 80 and above is probably dead....at
least I would'nt want that assumption when I'm 80.

Our archive has had an enquiry recently which has led to a great
deal of discussion and no conclusion so I was hoping someone out
there would have a definitive and, of course, blindingly obvious
answer. The request is from a son for his father's employment
record from a collection we hold. There is very little information
indeed on the actual record but it does include his date of birth
[1921]. The son has said that his father is dead but we have no
proof of the death or even of the relationship. Where do we stand
in relation to this information? can we assume death after a certain
age as a policy [although i think i'd pick something higher than
80]? should we ask to see a death certificate for the father? It
does seem like a lot of effort and possible pain being involved for a
minute amount of information but we wouldn't wish to set an ill-
judged precedent. if anyone can help, i'd appreciate it.
