Have been going through the process of questioning these processes.
For information:-
The answer which seems to be the mainly consistent one across the
organisation is that the line managers need to know what the illness is for
them to carry out their role properly when visiting the individual or
assisting them on return to work.
I have challenged this along the lines of the visits potentially being
conducted by the occupational health unit. That was not received well by
the line managers I spoke to, and all sorts of other reasons started to
emerge why they 'needed' to know what the illness was. Interestingly it was
also not received well by the occupational health unit either, who felt they
did not have the resources, time or need to carry out that visiting
function. I have yet to try the 'Are the visits really necessary?'
question. :-)
