Education Dept keeps student grant application records for 7 yrs after the student has left the College/University.
Personnel records kept for 7 yrs (Asylum & Immigration Act 96) after the employee has left, six months for unsuccessful job applicants.
Don't know whether that may help in the discussion!

Dear All,
1. Students
How long do you keep references relating to students who have studied
at your institution for? Our personnel department has advised 10 years,
but references are stored on DIP and once they have been put onto DIP,
there is no way of removing them. Everything I read says 6 years for
student records.
References relating to students who do not take up a place at all are
not kept.
2. Employees
References obtained through the recruitment process for individuals
subsequently appointed are kept on file for 7 years after that
individual leaves. For those not appointed references are kept for 6
months.
Do other institutions do things very differently? Does anybody know of
a guide to the retention of records which covers documents in this kind
of detail?
Rebecca
