Agree with Charles - Here at Paisley the DPO is responsible to the University Secretary (Admin) However, I also deal with HRA, FOI, RIPA SEN &DDA, and Copyright ! You will probably find every institution is different - e.g. I'm "full-time" whereas I know some places have a "One-day a week" DPO. etc. I notice a local NHS Trust is advertising for a full-time DPO (it mentions Caldicott) and the post reports to head of IT dept.

Hi,
The following are not necessarily comments representative of Dundee as I have
seen DP related messages flying in other lists ... and if they were on this
list we would be having a riot. That is, those high up must become aware!!!

Traditionally it has been within the Secretary's department (outside Scotland
= Secretary's and Registrar's department). We are going through some
re-organisation and I am coming to the conclusion (but is anyone
listening?) that we need a legal section within a central secretariat to
deal with legal matters.
RIPA, FOI, DP, Human Rights have to be coordinated. Then we also have
disability legislation, employment ups and downs, student appeals and so on.
DP and the rest require business analyses, high authority, and more resources
than institutions would be prepared to put in.
Responsibility and hopefully greater understanding should therefore lie
nearer the power centre. I would personally disagree with anyone wanting DP
placed within IT, Registry or Personnel departments. Given the best
efforts of staff with at least dual roles, inerpretation of the Act will be
definition be biased towards what they are involved with on a daily basis.
If it helps at all.
Charles
