Colleagues
I had the opportunity to meet and chat with the recently appointed
Senior Compliance Officer Peter Bloomfield, one of whose areas is
Education. He is very keen to join the mailing list but because
the OIC do not have PCs for every member of staff it is a very
intensive task to try and pick/distribute email from one of 2 of the
machines they do have connected. This is all due to change I am told!
It seems from the direct replies and many to the list that most members
are happy for the list to remain open as it is now. Any member who
blatantly misuses the list is dealt with one a one to one basis.
With regards to the useage of the list I will ask Jiscmail to provide
the form of words as governed by their contract for the Jisc Service
so that we can all be sure not to use the list for other purposes.
I will include this updated statement in the welcoming message to
new subscribers as well.
A comment which I also agree with follows. I often use other mail lists
and go to web site to check for threads etc. You can't belong to all the
lists, but every so often other things crop up.

Dear list-owner,

"Does this mean that netsurfing non-subscribers can currently read the
archive as easily as those who subscribe/contribute? "
As one of these "netsurfing non-subscribers", I much appreciate the ability
to check the archives every week or two to see whether anything interesting
has cropped up: DP is a small part of my work, but I'd rather not have all
the mail arriving. (I'm on umpteen library-related jiscmail lists already,
including lis-copyseek and copyrights as mentioned by Roger just recently).
I suppose if the list was closed I could join, then have a filtering rule to
delete all incoming mail from data-protection@jiscmail! But I hope you'll
keep the archives open. I'd have made this reply to the list, but then
discovered I couldn't without being logged on to jiscmail and, presumably,
recognised as a member of the list.
Best wishes,

I hope some of you use the archives because it is very easy to
search for topics that have been discussed in the past, and all messages
are now archived for ever.
I hope you have noticed that I have placed the DP Logo on the main
web page and also provided web links to the OIC home page,
Data Protection Forum and the Act itself. I hope you find these additions
useful.
Thanks and enjoy the list!
Sally
