Formally speaking civil legal aid does not exist anymore, and even if the person is applying for criminal legal aid it is not clear to me why the Law Society would have the right to information. To the best of my knowledge it does not oversee the scheme and courts make the decisions. The Law Society is principally a professional body for solicitors, not a public authority.
So this looks to me like a case where the presumption that an official-sounding body has the right to info ought to be checked!

One of the Housing Officers has telephoned me this morning to say that
they
had had a request in from the Law Society wishing to check how much
council
rent someone pays. They have obviously applied for legal aid and they
are
verifying the details - I presume there is some legislation which covers
this.
