Dear Fellow Sufferers,
A member of academic staff queried with me recently whether the
new Act means that we must now disclose - as personal data -
'raw' exam and assessment scores to students (i.e. marks - and
opinions expressed in relation to them - that have not been
confirmed by Exam Boards).
I checked this with the DPCO who confirmed that raw scores are
disclosable under Schedule 7, paragraph 8, sub-paragraph (1),
which states that:
'...personal data consisting of marks or other information
processed... for the purpose of determining the results of an
academic, professional or other examination or of enabling the
results of such examination to be determined...'
If this is so, it will mean a very significant shift in current practice -
hitherto, many folk at Leeds have considered pre-Exam Board
scores as opinion which becomes 'fact' only after any necessary
discussion (where there is disagreement between an internal and
an external examiner, for example) and formal confirmation by the
Board.
I am trying to find out whether this requirement is additional to the
1984 Act - and why - before going any further.
While I rummage through 3 boxes of documents, any views on this
requirement and on what is happening elsewhere?
