I can't think of any circumstances when it would be acceptable to use any of
the personal data held by an organisation for a college project. I don't
think there would be any objection to using anonymised statistical data, but
in my experience the only personal data which can be used by students are
those which the student has collected her/himself, with the consent of the
individual to their data being used for the student's purpose.

Subject: Use of personal data for projects
Some of you may have asked to give advice on this issue:
Some employees as part of their employment may enrol on a college course and
be
asked to undertake a project which requires them to use personal data from
their
organisation. This usually occurs when the project requires them to use
actual
personal data than hypothetical. Has anyone given any advice on this issue
with
respect to the DP Act.
The issues which automatically come to mind are confidentiality owed to the
individual in the personal data, issue of consent, disclosures of
information to
third parties and security of information. Have you been approached or given
advice on this issue and if so, what advice.
Regards,
Jody
