Paula's recent question about local authority councillors and access to
personal data makes me wonder what, if anything, needs to be done in
relation to the members of the governing bodies of universities. For
example, our governing body is Council; some members (academic) are
employees of the University, but others (lay) are not - though all members
of Council are 'members of the University' according to our Statutes. As a
body they don't have access to much personal data, though individual members
sit on things like the Promotions Committee, where they will have access to
quite a lot of personal data.
I'll be happy if someone can tell me this is a non-issue, but if it isn't
what do we need to do - get all members of Council to notify as data
controllers? put contracts in place with them? Or will a statement
outlining Council member's dp responsibilities in our Code of Practice cover
it?
Best wishes
Craig
