These are just the kinds of issues that I am currently trying to ensure my
LEA are aware of. If this were my child the data wouldn't be passed from
myself and I would express that my consent to use my child's data in this
way was withheld. For an LEA to quote the 1984 is terrible, but I can't
honestly say that it hasn't happened elsewhere.
I'm assuming that no explanation of why this data is required or any legal
power to request it? I personally would contact the DPO for the Council
responsible for the LEA (fingers crossed its not W'ton).

Subject: Pupil data - ethnicity & religion
I have received a form via my daughter's school from the local education
authority asking for details of pupil ethnicity, religion and language. It
identifies the child by name and school. I have no problem with providing
this information in a depersonalised form, but have refused so far to
complete this form because I consider it is excessive to link the data -
which I acknowledge would be statistically beneficial - to the child. The
form also mentions the data will be held on computer under the provisions of
DPA'84 (it doesn't say what happens to the paper copy of the form though).
Perhaps I will withhold the data until 24/10/01......
So, am I just nitpicking or is this LEA a bit behind the times? What do any
other LEAs do?
thanks
