Subject: dyslexia assessments

Yes, as are Occupational and other psycholosists - the issue in not the
particualr Division of Psychology but the individal psychologist's
background and training. For example, I happen to be an Occupational
Psychologist and thus tend to gravitate toward the post 16 group althoug
I do also assess children.
The BPS makes it clear that Chartered Psychologists are expected to ensure
that they are competent to conduct effectively whatever professional work
which they undertake. The Dyslexa Institute employs pschologists from at
least 3 Divisions, possibly more and it vets its pschologists equally
whatever their Division. For some years, Examination Boards have accepted
assessments from psychologists from a variety of disciplinces and there
don't seem to have been any problems. I don't think you can generalise and
judge the relative merits of psychologists simply on the basis of the
overall specialism - there are too many other factors involved. For
example, an experienced osychologist who has counselling and relevant
teaching experience is likely, but only likely, to be more successful that a
relatively inexpereinced psychologist who does not have these or other
relavent areas iof expertise. .It's the individual rather than the
specialism that counts.
Any Chartered Psychologist offering assessments should be fully cometent
to do so adequately - whether another psychologist would suit your
particual requirements better is
whereas an Educational Psychologist would tend to start off with the pre-16
group but many EPs work in Higher Education.
