Hi all
I've always tried to keep my nose out of anything to do with NHS
bursaries, coming as it does under the heading of "somebody else's
problem". However, following discussions with a student and the local
careers service it would appear that students on a non means tested NHS
bursary are NOT entitled to DSA. Now sorry if this is blindingly obvious
to everyone else but it does seem incredibly unjust. The reason given (by
some unnamed source at the NHS) is that because of the higher level of
funding available under the bursary (in excess of £5000), DSA support is
unnecessary.
Surely the fundamental flaw in this argument is that if a student without
any special needs requires x amount of support to complete their course
of higher education, then a student with special needs may need
additional support over and above x. The actual value of x is largely
immaterial.
The again, maybe I'm just trying to divert some of the vitriol usually
reserved for LEA's in the direction of the NHS :)
