HIGHER EDUCATION FOR CAPABILITY
Strategies for Skill Development
Rutland Square Hotel, Nottingham
23 May
A further conference and workshop in our programme on
the skills curriculum
Following our very successful conference on skills in our
Delivering Dearing Series, Higher Education for Capability
has responded to requests from those in higher and further
education for an event that specifically targets the process
of introducing skills and managing change. While there have
been several conferences on skills development, classroom
practice and learning activities, the management of the
skills development process itself has been largely ignored.
The conference will explore such questions as
Shouldthere be a common institutional position on skills
attainment?
Whatis the latest thinking on a coherent skills ’curriculum?
Isit more effective to work through subject associations or
across institutions?
Howcan the workload of auditing student skills
achievement be managed?
Should skills be developed in stand-alone units or as part
of an undifferentiated skills-rich programme?
Whatlevel of responsibility should the student assume in
the whole process?
Speakers include
Professor Graham Gibbs How institutions can
support the development of skills
Ifan Shepherd Can we develop
transferability in skills?
Karen Powell -Williams The qualities employers
value
Professor Peter Newby Review of strategies
Professor Roger Murphy Review and conclusions
plus seminars on successful strategic approaches
The cost of the day is £40 per delegate and includes the
conference fee, refreshments and a copy of the papers in
HEC’s journal, Capability, on publication.
