Surely if we remove the reply to list function it would mean that over a period the archive would become virtually useless as it would just have a load of questions but with no responses. In a recent request for info on large book rests I got some very useful replies and whilst I am sure that they will not have been of interest to everyone at the moment the fact that the replies went to the list means that if anyone needs that info in the future they can check it out in the archive.
If people are being careless and this is becoming irritating these could be dealt with on an individual basis. Besides the reply to list sometimes brings out some humour - no not the embarrassing kind but I sure we all remember incidents when we have had 20 or so I am on holiday at the moment messages a day.

Why change something that is obviously working well?... well sometimes it
doesn't work well. There have been a few very embarrassing mistakes where
people have sent private emails to the whole international list. We know
that people should be more careful but many's the time the reply button gets
hit without the mailer checking EXACTLY where it is going, also irritating
one liners would be cut down on, if like me you have a message interrupt you
everytime you have a mail it can be a bit irritating if it wasn't meant for
you.
Also if you are very lonely and feeling unloved a wrong message just
underlines your unpopularity! (just kidding here folks, I don't need any
reassurance).
Although comfortably sitting on the fence I guess I would be pro reply to
sender taking all things into account.I would consider it the receivers
responsibility to pass on interesting info, or the responders if they felt
the info would be of interest to others (and there you hit another
problem... what IS interesting to others?)
This list is quite well behaved in comparison to some I am on.

I totally agree with Celia - we need to keep the reply option. As a
relatively new member to the list - I have already found this aspect
invaluable. Why change something that is oviously working well?
