The SASSA (Study Aids and Study Strategies Assessment) carried out by
NFAC Centres can only be based on the information gathered before,
during and after the assessment. The assessment is one avenue through
which information can be gathered and exchanged and the 'client' given
the opportunity to consider and evaluate a range of alternative
strategies/solutions.
I doubt that there are any ACCESS Centres who posses the resources which
would enable a 'client' to evaluate a range of mobility related
equipment/solutions. At Hereward we are fortunate in that we can tap
into other on-site expertise eg Physiotherapists however, we do not have
rollators, scooters, walking frames which are available for 'clients' to
evaluate. If, during the DSA assessment process it becomes apparent
that the student should seek other advice and the guidance of other
experts the resulting report will include this amongst its
recommendations. We have two cases at present where we have advised the
students to research other equipment and have provided contact points to
support this process. The report will not recommend specific items of
equipment in these cases because we do not have the expertise to enable
us to say that one item is better than the other because ..... however,
the report will give a 'guide' price to the student and their LEA of a
minimum and maximum cost.
I hope this helps.
