I have been a member of the list for some time, but this is my first input
to it.
By means of introduction, I am the data protection officer here at Liverpool
John Moores University. However, my question has nothing to do with
University DP (interesting as it is).
Having recently submitted an application for planning permission for some
alterations to my home I did not receive any correspondence from the local
council. My application was submitted by an agent (the contractor who will
be carrying out the works). I did not hear anything from the local council
until an official turned up at my home and stuck a notice of my address and
alteration details to the nearest lampost.
My neighbours have been written to (which I expected) and then my name and
address, and details of alterations, were announced in the local paper.
I am now being bombarded with letters from contractors who would like to do
the work for me. They tell me that they obtained my details through the
local council 'Contractors List' scheme !
I know that planning applications have to be publicised to allow any
objections to be made, but I don't think my details should have been passed
to contractors by the local council or that my name and address should have
been put in the paper (address only would have sufficed).
Does anyone have any advice about this.
