I have been asked for an opinion on the issue of aegrotat degrees ( i.e.
degrees where the award has been made under a procedure which allows a
result to be determined despite some or all examinations having been missed
due to illness)
We currently indicate such a result on certificates to indicate that this
special procedure has been used. The wording indicates 'An Aegrotat Degree'
instead of 'First Class Honours' etc.
It has been suggested to me, and I find the argument compelling in terms of
the 1998 Act, that this is tantamount to publishing sensitive information
without explicit consent, because it indicates that the student has suffered
serious illness during his/her degree course.
Any opinions ?
