Just to justify the rather strong opinions I have expressed so far.

I have not thought of the wording but I take the point of "world wide".
Having said that "world wide" is not as nasty as we can make it sound.
Universities in particular fall over each other in trying to attract
overseas students. Those students pay very fat fees which pay our
salaries. If we want the "customer" we have got to go and get them, and
if we want their money it might help us become a bit better at what we
do if we like them too.
When it comes to postgraduate study, personal contact is important. That
is what gets the student, not the glossy prospecti.

If staff don't want email address or whatever else published we DON'T
need a reason. If I ask why, I am immediately delving into their private
affairs and I have herd reasons which I think are so stupid. I don't
want to have to form opinions about my colleagues based on some daft idea
they may have about protecting themselves. I would rather we applied DP
to ourselves first and foremost. If I don't need to know I should not
know. If I do know, I am human, and therefore I form an opinion.

Charles
