Fellow data protection racketeers,
I'd welcome your guidance and/or observations on the following
(topical) scenario :
1) A student drops out of university without telling his (or her)
parents.
2) His parents approach the university for details of when their
child is graduating. (He isn't because he's dropped out!)
3) The university doesn't wish to betray any confidences and,
in line with the Data Protection Acts 1984 and 1998, says you
will need to talk to your child about this.
4) The parents say we can't, he's travelling in China, but he's
given us Power of Attorney (and produce the said document,
duly signed and witnessed) so just tell us instead.
What should the university do ?
John.
