For those of you not present yesterday the Data Protection Forum
we were very pleased to have amongst other guest speakers, Elizabeth
France.
[COP = Code of practice]
The interesting points to bring to your attention are :-
1. They are working on COPs, the first of which will be on CCTV
due to be published mid July with the Annual Report. This will
be followed by the EMPLOYMENT which will be posted to their web
site around September for consultation over a period opf 3 months
and hopefully be published at the end of the year.
She also said that is any trade asscociations/industries are working
on a COP for their own industry that they should run them by the
ODPC and get their endorsement. They won't be doing all the hard
work that would be down to the working parties! She did say that
COPs should not just simply be a repetition of the principles, etc.
but should add value with specific guidance for a particular
industry.
2. The Annual Report this year will be VIRTUAL - due to broadcast
on 11 and 12 July , watch the web site for details.
3. With regards to reference giving, she again said that we should
all move to the point of inclusion of a form of words on every
reference form/letter that will ask for consent to disclose if
an access request is made. She also said that she would always
copy the person with the refrence when given and she wouldn't
put in anything that she didn't want the person to see. In the
EMPLOYMENT COP they will suggest form of words.
We also had a very informative session from Equifax on the Commercial Use
of the Electoral Roll which changes as from 1.12.01 ACPO Data Protection
Portfolio Group also gave a good session on Information Sharing, a set of
protocols may be released for others to build on, keep you posted on this
list.
If you missed this excellent day you might consider joining the the DP Forum
and details about can be found at www.sbu.ac.uk/dpforum/
Points as I recall them!, anyone present who has more to add or refute
please feel free to do so.
