Jo
I am waiting for our Registrary to return from leave next week before deciding
what we will do next. I think it very unlikely we will agree to release these
details. If the pilot were a success then presumably the next stage would be
to ask for these details for all students. It would then be possible for a
future Government to target particular groups of students e.g. foreign
nationals) should they wish to do so. This is completely unacceptable as far
as I am concerned and, in my view, cannot be considered a statutory
requirement under the DPA (see my e-mail to admin-hesa). I also think it will
do this University considerable harm (and open to legal action) if a student
gets a letter or call from MORI when the address or phone no was supplied to
the University on the strict understanding that it wouldn't be released.
I would be interested to know how many other HEIs have refused to release the
data.

Subject: HESA & MORI
Hi
We are being asked again to release names and addresses of students to HESA
for first destination returns and HESA will also pass the information onto
MORI.
Has there been a final decision made on this yet?
