I would say the best way to proceed is to give the student a progress report
and suggest quietly to the employer that they make it a condition of their
day release contract to provide a copy of the report.
That way, you are only disclosing to the data subject and they - if they fail
to provide the copy - would be in breach of their contract. If they feel the
contract term is unfair they can take it up with the appropriate authority -
the Uni would not be involved.
