Hi Jane,
I didn't mean to upset anyone by reference to 'ivory towers', but the
original email on 'enough is enough' seem to smack of exactly that. While
accepting that the list was established to facilitate discussion of DP
within academic institutions, those same institutions are affected by the
real issues affecting business today (and especially in an e2m environment)
- some of these core issues, marketing for example, are now of great
importance to universities etc who are struggling to develop new business
models.
Moreover, many business organisations are involved in research into data
protection and privacy at the social and technological level - I would have
thought that a sharing and cross-fertilisation of ideas was exactly what was
needed to bridge the gap between academia and business that is apparent in
many areas.
Again, no offence intended.
Kind regards
Pat

Well I wasn't going to be drawn into this one but the reference to
ivory towers has done it!! While perfectly happy to see what is
going on elswhere, I do share colleagues concerns that a
mail-list set up for academic institutions (that's what
JISC is about guys!) spends so much time (and space on
my email) discussing such things as whether M&S
have or haven't breached the Act and why the DP Commissioner
isn't going to do anything about whatever it is (if you want them
to, try complaining to them, not the rest of us!). If everyone else
has the time to worry about that, fine, but I do begin to wonder who
exactly is in the ivory tower...
Seriously I don't want to lose the value of a mailbase, but maybe
we could all try to think about the actual value of contributions
to the debate rather than sharing anecdotes - or even insults - ,
however interesting. Having said which I promise not to waste
everyone's time with any more complaints..
