Yeah I thought that that was the idea of equal opportunities policies?!?
There are obvious things such as the field trip organiser should be aware of
any potential medical emergencies and how to handle them, but this is
equally relevant ot all participants and not just those seen as disabled. It
would be courteous if the organiser was aware of the accessibility of the
area which is being visited in advance. I used to be involved in PHAB
camping trips, initially as an able bodied teenager and later as a disabled
member of the group, there wasn't agreat deal that even the most impaired
young person couldn't do, including abseiling, rock climbing, skiing,
canoeing, and most importantly being a member of the group. With education,
awareness and ingenuity there are lots of ways of getting around the
apparent barriers of disability.
