Hi
I'm stunned by the idea of NOT compensating them - if, indeed, there
were unforseen communication problems (I prefer not to speculate further
on the 'unforseen' without access to the full picture). If there is no
compensation, the deaf student's peers may regard him/her as a
liability in future group situations, and they are sure to resent having
someone's definition of the social model inflicted upon them if it is
going to cost them assignment marks.
As others have implied, there are several issues here of which we should
be mindful - given that the situation may affect many - or all of us at
some stage.
I feel that the sensible short term solution is indeed to award
additional marks. As for similar situations in future, some of the
options suggested by others sound reasonable. In the long term, though,
it would be nice to see this issue addressed at a more fundamental level
- so that 'effective communication', whether assessed or not, is
underpinned by an Equal Opps philosophy.
Regards
Peter Hill
