Dear Phil et al,
Speaking as the mother of two people on the
Aspergers/Autism spectrum, I would say that although
medically it is classed as a condition, it can _appear_ as
an illness. It is certainly a disability with extreme
(social and educational) consequences, which affects many
students, though it is frequently mis-diagnosed as mental
illness of one sort or another.
Certainly I would see the man played by Jack Nicholson in
"As good as it gets" as AS; one of AS's main indicators is
obsessive and compulsive behaviour. Many people have also
been diagnosed as schizophrenic and later discovered to be
AS when the schiz treatment didn't work.
