The problems of a mouse eating the Host and a spider in the chalice are common pastoral
problems, dealt with in most pastoral manuals (often in a section "De negligenciis in
missa" or the like. Early collections of these sorts of canons are found in Burchard of
Worms' *Decretum* (5.46-49) and in Gratian, de cons. D.2 cc.27-28.
Gary Macy has an interesting article on this: "Of Mice and Manna: Quid Mus Sumit as a
Pastoral Question," *Recherches de théologie ancienne et médiévale* 58 (1991): 157-66.
