SAINT AUGUSTINE ?
The following text appears on a number of memorial cards in
my possession. Tradition says the text is from St Augustine:
is it accurate, and where does it come from? Perhaps someone
has m-readable Augustine? Or just knows... I only know it in
English.
<< Blessed are they who have passed over the great and
wide sea to the eternal shore, and are now happy in their
desired rest. Blessed are they who have escaped from all
evils, and are secure in their unfading glory on thee. O
everlasting kingdom, kingdom of all ages, whereon rests
the untroubled light and peace of God, which passeth all
understanding; where the souls of the saints are at rest
and everlasting joy is upon their heads, and sorrow and
sighing have fled away.
There is unfading infinite joy, gladness without sorrow,
health without a pang, life without toil, light without
darkness, life without death; there the vigour of age
knows no decay, and beauty withers not, nor doth love
grow cold, nor joy fade away: for there we look upon the
face of the Lord of Hosts.>>
