Dear colleague,
Since 2002 we report a calculated Mg together with every measured Mg result.
The formula used is
Mg(calc) = Mg(measured) + (40 - Albumin) x 0,005
Mg results are in mMol/L;
Albumin results are in g/L;
Albumin is measured with BCP on Beckman LX20.
We feel that Mg(calc) is better reflecting the free magnesium concentration
than
the measured concentration. On our ICU we regularly measure albumin
concentrations < 8 g/L (we use synthetic colloids to keep COD up).
Best regards,
Christian
