Yes, this is undoubtedly so. Each factor and term in an algorithm will be associated with an uncertainty. It gets a bit complicated when calculating the combined uncertainty since error propagation rules have a tendency to fail when the algorithm contains exponents, logarithms, multiplication, and division. Therefore, the uncertainty of calculated quantities is usually estimated by simulations (see JCGM 101:2008. www.BIPM:ORG<http://www.BIPM:ORG>). If you are seriously interested I would be happy to share my Excel spreadsheet program for simulating the uncertainty of calculated quantities by algorithms with up to 15 terms, assuming a normal, rectangular, or triangular distribution of the factors [...]

There's an interesting blog post by Marcus Baw on the subject of clinical calculations. He proposes that clinical calculations and decision support tools should be hosted by a trusted source (he suggest royal colleges) and interface with the EPR using an API. Essentially there is then just one calculator that has been robustly tested. [...]

Brian

GIRFT showed that 30% of the AKI calculations in use were wrong and we advised on correcting this. Thus, the debate about regulation of calculations is a debate that needs to be had. There are many equations in use, but do we know the robustness of them? For example, looking at UKNEQAS data, the %CV of the ALTM on Adjusted Calcium is bigger that the %CV of measured Calcium, indicating that the Adjustment calculation has added increased variation. We have an online system for requesting for inpatients, GPs have an email address to request, and we will also accept by phone call. Dear all, I’ve no update on the specific question about the status of LIMS systems, but just a reminder that the original post was back in May 2022 and regarding CE marking, the timelines for mandatory UKCA marking were extended as below, again subject to no significant change as in the EU IVDR Article 110(3) and MDCG 2022-06, and for certified devices, that the manufacturers / Notified Bodies certificate remains valid. For self-declared (having a manufacturers Declaration of Conformity, but no device certificate) they can in theory remain on the market until 2030, however this is dependent upon the EU [...]
