Lindisfarne Gospels Resource Boxes
EDUCATION CONSULTANT - JOB DESCRIPTION
Job purpose:
To research, develop and produce resource boxes for schools (primary and
secondary) based on the Lindisfarne Gospels, and in particular centred on the
British Library's Painted Labyrinth exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity
for an experienced education specialist to create resource material to enthral
a new generation in the wonders of the Lindisfarne Gospels.
Timescale:
20 days in total:
3 days in June/July 2003
15 days between July 2003 and January 2004
2 days in March 2004
Location:
NEMLAC region, with one 2 day visit to the British Library in London
Reporting to:
Ian Blackwell, Head of Access & Learning, NEMLAC and Project Group lead by
Chris Warden, Principal Library & Archives Officer, Northumberland County
Council
Fee:
20 days @ £180 per day (Total £3,600 gross) + expenses
Outline:
In May 2003 a new exhibition based on the Lindisfarne Gospels and the world in
which they were created opens at the British Library. This project will see
the creation of resource boxes, based on the exhibition, which will be
available on loan to schools throughout the North East. There will be 40 boxes
which will cover a wide range of National Curriculum subjects at Key Stages 1
to 4, and will be suitable for a range of learning styles and abilities.
NEMLAC wishes to appoint an education specialist with experience of devising
learning resources based on objects and collections to design and develop the
contents of the boxes. This will include research, creating activities,
writing teachers' notes, sourcing the contents of the boxes and piloting and
evaluating their success with teachers and pupils. Durham Learning Resources,
based at Durham County Hall, has offered space for storing the contents and
assembling the boxes. It is envisaged that the consultant will be based in the
North East in order to liaise closely with project partners in the region.
Main tasks:
Research:
To spend 3 days (June/July) at the British Library with the Research Team. The
Research Team comprises of the appointee, and the Senior Education Officer,
Bede's World; a secondary school art teacher; a school librarian and a
consultant familiar with the Lindisfarne Gospels and the British Library's
collections. The team will work with the British Library Education Team and
study the exhibition and other relevant material from the British Library
collections.
Development:
To work this research material into teachers' resources and pupils' activities
and source relevant replica objects and material to produce 4 boxes as a pilot
phase (September/October), make any necessary changes and then produce the
remaining boxes for launch in January 2004.
Evaluation:
To pilot the initial developments of new learning resources with schoolchildren
and teachers to ensure material is relevant to classroom work and stimulating.
A summative evaluation of the process of developing the boxes will be required
to inform any future projects.
