Sounds like 'vituperatio' (opposite of 'laus'), only restricted to the
personal sphere. Ancient discussions of praise and blame recognize
personal attributes, etc. as grist for the mill in both directions. You
might see if the Ad Herennium's discussion of this matter (beginning of Bk.
3) accords with your inquiry. A quick way in is to go to
