What explains the variation in life expectancy by social class in the last
3 decades?
The difference between male life expectancy for Social Classes I and
V was 5.5year in 1972-76, and it rose to 9.5 years for the period
1992-96. Latest figures for 1999 show that the gap has decreased to
7.5 years. Did the Thatcher years result in greater health inequalities?
Has the Blair government started to reverse the trend?
In this seminar the panel will review the behavioural, social, economic
and health trends over the past 3 decades and offer explanations for
the changes in life expectancy. Professor Sir Michael Marmot,
UCL, will chair the seminar.
NB. Half of the seminar will be devoted to questions from the
audience. Participants are invited to e-mail their questions for the
panel in advance to E-mail: { HYPERLINK mailto:[log in to unmask]
