'THINKING AND DOING' CONFERENCE:
Date: Saturday 2nd February 2002 12.00-6.00
Venue: Southampton Institute, East Park Terrace, Southampton ( central venue
within walking distance of the railway station)
This is first notice of, and invitation to the "Thinking and Doing"
conference : a response to the post-September 11th course of events. It is
being sent to anybody we can think of who might be interested in the idea
and or can pass it on to other people who might like to participate. There
will be some further publicity to follow.
The conference organisers are members of the anti-war group associated with
the University of Southampton who wrote a letter to the THES in October
calling for the creation of a national network of academics and like-minded
people. The letter was impelled in part by a sense of isolation and
impotence in the face of entirely unconsultative and in our view -
undemocratic government decision-making.But also in part by an awareness
that there were a great number of people out there¹ who shared our anxiety,
frustration - and anger!
In attempting to bring together likeminded people our aim is to build a
firmer, more coherent dissenting voice, in universities, colleges and
elsewhere to policies which we perceive to be profoundly mistaken. In
bringing together academics, with other practitioners, activists,
peacemakers and professionals who share our concerns we aspire to pool
information, knowledge and expertise in a way which can be coherently voiced
and disseminated to government and public in the future.
We acknowledge that after the events of September 11th the world will never
be the same. All the more reason we believe why we need to work in the
universities and beyond to create some framework in which both dissent and
alternative ways of thinking and doing¹ can be purposefully developed.
The development of this framework - ( organisation, association, network?)
- is the primary purpose of the conference. We do not have a map or an
actual substantive proposal as such. Nor do we want to lead such a movement.
All we're really trying to do is facilitate what we believe could be
possible and provide that first tentative step towards its realisation.
