If it is of any interest--at least it has some use to a lot of people--8 is a
lucky number amongst the Chinese (the words for "eight" and "lucky" are
homonyms). The practicality of knowing this is that one can turn a license
plate, e.g., into a tidy sum of money, providing that there are enough eights
to make it attractive. My old license place, with three eights, was regarded
with some respect. And since 1 means "always," the relevant portion of my
phone number means "always, always, always, always lucky."

But if you write it as it would have been written in Western Europe at the
time, a.d. vi Id. Aug. DCCCLXXXVIII, it loses a lot of the mystique.
