Dear All,
with my proposal to call 'it' WDR world design responsibility, I didn't want to go into a Sustainable Design discussion.
I always thought that is far too limited and a term which confuses. I have looked into the archive of this list and I have seen that it was a topic which was discussed many times. I refer to one statement from Michael A R Biggs, from, 2002-10-29
From: Michael A R Biggs:
These seem to me to be like the term "sustainable design". Is there anyone
who advocates "unsustainable design"? If not, what use is the term? Are
there any advocates of "non-participatory, non-user-driven,
non-user-inspired or undemocratic design"? If there are not, or they form a
small minority of current practice, what are we saying when we use these terms?
That doesn't mean that there are many people who are doing good work and research within the framework of sustainable design.
For me the concept of sustainable design is misleading since it assumes that there is something which can be sustained.
The human race has changed the world since we are able to construct history! And we are going to change it further in a suprisinf pace.
One example where I think that sustainable design doesn't fit:
I was reading an article at futurezone.de about the development of CRISPR
(https://www.futurezone.de/science/article228611425/Homo-Deus-Mit-der-Genschere-CRISPR-koennte-der-Mensch-zum-Gott-werden.html)
and I did some research in the field and found many papers. To give you a taste:
https://genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13059-015-0823-x
https://academic.oup.com/bioinformatics/article/31/22/3676/240873
The headline of the article which I did mention was, Homo Deus - With the gene scissors man becomes a god. (translated, it is written in German)
There is no doubt that generic engineering is design, from my perspective. Therefore our responsibility is far bigger!
Thank you for the hint Britta that DRS Sustainability SIG are trying to work on this issue.
