I agree with you - language matters. In this particular case, however, it
was a Canuckistanian (me) talking to an Australian group. In that context,
I think it's reasonable to assume conventional English senses of terms
would constitute the "official" language of communication. If I was
communicating with a group that I *knew* had a strong influence from some
other language (say, a Romance language) then I'd've modified my thinking
to accommodate.
