Here we go again…
The confusion that only exits in English because in that language there is also a human capacity described as “design” common to lots of activities. This capacity is confused with the professional realm of Designers.
Imagine that the professional realm of Composers (people who writes music and get money doing it, and pay their bills doing it) is confused with all the composing activities, from making manure out of vegetable remains, to people who organize military facilities, to people who teach others to behave at weddings and so on.
Or “writing” . Why should we concentrate only on WRITERS. All forms of writing should be included in Writers' prizes, not only Literature an Poetry, but ophthalmology papers, house maids notes, twitters and even DT speeches. And what about graphiters and computing people who write codes?
Of course that we could also look upon Directors (wrongly defined only for film). Why is the Directors Guild never awarded someone in post offices or Zoo departments? There is a lot of directing work been done, however, year, after year, this is not acknowledge by the American Film Academy. And since we are talking about film, what about acting? Shouldn’t Actors’ professional activity be looked upon and compared with all human actions? Engineers and Architects often act. Why should they not be considered for an Oscar?… At least for a supporting role…

Fil,
You are old and cranky but you’re not *just* old and cranky.
