Even more fundamental changes than the rummours! Thanks Liz for posting link - and thanks all for the debate so far!

First impressions: I do wonder what learning theory supports a belief that starting with prehistory and working through will help develop chronological understanding? I would argue it is more important to choose accessible topics and stories that will inspire and be relevant to the age group being taught.

So for primary pupils I would think that inspiring children with interesting stories that relate to their own experience of the world may be more important than chronological sequence - and getting a rough idea of a few different periods on a timeline is essential - it will be very strange if KS2 cannot study anything later than 17thc even if it links to other subjects, local history or major event etc.

What has happened to subjects like childhood, toys, homes, schooling in the past for primary children? These are all topics they are likely to relate to and be able to make meaningful comparisions with their own experience. The idea of teaching William Wilberforce at KS1 is very scary - and certainly doesn't fit the research done by the Understanding Slavery Initiative.

Oh and what about teaching around creative topics and cross curricular learning? Am I correct that there are no explicit cross curricular links?

I don't want to just be negative and do welcome the opportunity to teach some different periods than the old QCA units - but this seems as prescriptive and over ambitious in scope. Leaving little room for teachers to make creative choices about what they teach.

Unless they have opted out of National curriculum ofcourse - which maybe more schools will do, if they don't like this curriculum.

I return to indepth reading of the full document and I look forward to continued debate!

I wonder if the person who wrote this has ever met a child? I have only looked at the History section but it seems that it's an impossible ask to deliver that an for children to make sense of it.

I presume it isn't only me who glanced over that document and wondered how on earth teachers are going to cover the quantity of KS2 stuff in any meaningful way.

And how well 6-7 year olds (KS1) are actually going to be able to cope with 'concepts such as civilisation, monarchy, parliament, democracy, and war and peace that are essential to understanding history'

Thanks for sending this out to everyone Liz. Sadly no compulsory history for 14-16 year olds.

Museums should especially note - no Victorians at KS2!! and hopefully the six wives could be finally put to rest as well ...

best wishes

As the DfE website states

On 7 February 2013, draft programmes of study for all National Curriculum subjects <http://media.education.gov.uk/assets/files/pdf/n/national%20curriculum%20consultation%20-%20framework%20document.pdf> in Key Stages 1 to 3, and draft programmes of study for citizenship, computing and PE in Key Stage 4, were published for consultation.

It makes for very interesting reading ,,,,,,particularly at KS2 History...
