Hi Ken,
I agree. That's why I apologised and amended my second email to 'seen from
within Art and Design fields'.
Best,
Terry

Subject: Re: Wicked Problems
Geez, Terry,
The notion that the references I provided "only describe 'wicked problems'
from the Art and Design perspective" is incorrect and ill informed.
There are several problems packed into this inaccurate claim. There are many
design fields and many of them have perspectives quite different to the art
and design perspective typified by artisan craft guild traditions. You tend
to label many perspectives with which you disagree as "art and design,"
whatever perspective they actually represent.
The list I put forward has items by 13 authors. I can't find my copy of the
DeGrace and Stahl book, but I can tell you who the other 11 authors are.
They do not represent the "art and design" sector.
Horst Rittel was a professor of the science of design at the University of
California at Berkeley, with appointments in Department of Architecture and
Department of City and Regional Planning.
Melvin Webber was a professor of urban planning at University of California,
Berkeley. His background included degrees in sociology and economics.
Valerie A. Brown is Visiting Fellow at the Fenner School of Environment and
Society<http://fennerschool.anu.edu.au/> in the Australian National
University College of Medicine, Biology and
Environment<http://cmbe-cpms.anu.edu.au/>. She was formerly Director of the
Local Sustainability Project at ANU, and she won the AO for her work.
John A. Harris is former Head of School of Environmental Science, University
of Canberra.
Jacqueline Y. Russell works in the Social Sciences Program of the Australian
Bureau of Rural Sciences.
Dick Buchanan is a philosopher, a professor of design, and now a professor
of management at Case Western Reserve University.
C. West Churchman was a philosopher and systems scientist. He was a
professor at the School of Business Administration at the University of
California at Barkley, and a seminal figure in operations research and
system analysis.
Jeff Conklin works in hypertext and collaborative technology research. He
works extensively as a consultant, serving clients such as World Bank, the
United Nations, NASA, Verizon, and other public and private sector
organizations.
Jon Kolkhoz is Director of the Austin Center for
Design<http://www.ac4d.com/>. He has a background in industrial design and
HC, and he has worked for major design consultancies as well as serving as
Editor-in-Chief of the Interactions Magazine<http://interactions.acm.org/>
published by theACM.
Chanpory Rith is a software designer who works at Google.
Hugh Dubberly is principal of the Dubberly Sign Office. He was a manager at
Apple back in the 80s and 90s.
While I can't find the book by Peter De Grace and Leslie Hulet Stahl, I do
not recall that they come from the "art and design" sector of design.
Yours,
Ken
