Dear All
Steve Stigwood is absolutely right: whilst tomorrow's strike is
ostensibly about the Government's foolish attempts to introduce
sweeping and unjust changes to public sector pensions without any
form of meaningful negotiations this event is really about workers
across the public sector joining together to express their alarm and
disgust at the way that the present regime is attempting to make the
public sector carry the can for an economic crisis caused by
irresponsible and greedy bankers. The alarm that many in public
sector feel at this is not reduced by the observation that socially
and politically the present government is closer to the greedy rich
than to the ordinary citizens of this country.
David Dawson is right to point out that there is another side to the
pensions argument, and I'm sure that many reading this list will feel
sympathy with the real plight of small independent museums such as
Wiltshire Heritage Museum. It is worrying that the cost of funding a
pension for one retired employee is equivalent to the salary of
another, but this suggests that there's an underlying problem with
the management of the pension fund, and so the museum are just as
much victims of the financial crisis as their employees.
As a freelance I'm not sure that anyone would notice if I went on
strike, but my wife works in the NHS and she will certainly be 'out'
tomorrow.
I hope many who read this will be joining her
in solidarity
