Hi Liz,
The Horniman Museum runs a free Community Projects with our Objects
workshop (flier attached) which trains community group leaders to lead
projects/ one-off visits with their groups at the Horniman.
We tend to target groups who have visited us independently or who have
attended facilitated sessions here. We also have a database of local
community groups from which we have targeted refugee groups, early years
and young people in the past.
We market in a variety of ways but word of mouth (especially giving
participants fliers for the next workshop to pass on to colleagues)
tends to work best.
During the one day workshop we provide a background to the object
handling gallery at the Horniman and the ethos behind it, a short
'safety with objects' session, a tour of the museum including galleries
and teaching spaces, a couple of 'teaching with objects' exercises and a
chance to brainstorm ideas for projects with us and other participants.
After the workshop we offer one-to-one sessions to plan individual
projects.
The workshops are based on a general museum visit.
The workshops last from 10am to 4pm and the follow-up sessions can be up
to an hour. We hold the workshops on Wednesdays due to room availability
but this does pose problems for group leaders who work full-time during
the week. We run the workshops about 3 times per year.
The take-up has generally been good although the last 2 have had lower
attendance - we haven't worked out why yet. Almost all attendees return
with their community groups and have produced some fantastic projects.
If you would like any more info or to attend a workshop to see how it
works (next one coming up on 3rd June) do get in contact.
All the best,
Julia

Subject: Does your museum run INSET information/training sessions for
community group leaders?
Hi all
I know that a lot of museums run INSET sessions especially for teachers
to
prepare them for a museum group visit/explain about resources
available/give them practical information about arriving, lunch areas
etc
What I am interested in is if there are any museums out there who run a
similar sort of INSET session but for community group leaders rather
than
teachers to encouarge them to bring their groups to the museum. If you
do,
would you be willing to share information with me on the following:
- who do you target (e.g. extended schools, youth groups, older people
groups?)
- how do you market the sessions to group leaders?
- what do you provide during the sessions?
- are they based on a general museum visit or particular exhibitions?
- how long do the sessions last?
- when do you hold them (or does this vary?)
- what has take-up been like by group leaders?
Many thanks for any help you can give.
Regards
Liz
