That's what I seemed to remember as well. Even in the literature of popular piety its pretty clear that many martyrs deliberately invited their fate, which
seems to be a pervasive part of the cult/culture of martyrdom. I also seem to recall that there is some preaching against this behaviour, even from the
Church Fathers (although exact references escape me at the moment).
It certainly adds to the dynamics of the situation.
